Local Governments Get Financial Autonomy Boost in Landmark Court Ruling - Nigeria's Supreme Court has delivered a landmark judgment granting financial autonomy to the country's 774 local government councils (LGAs). In a powerful decision, the court ordered the federal government to immediately begin direct payments of allocated funds to exclusive LGA accounts, bypassing state governments. Justice Emmanuel Agim, reading the lead judgment, criticized the decades-long practice of state control over local government finances. He emphasized that democratically elected LGAs have the right to manage their own funds, not caretaker committees. This move aims to empower LGAs to improve service delivery and address concerns about mismanagement by some state governors. Previously, local government funds were paid into a joint account controlled by both state and local governments. This often resulted in accusations of mismanagement and limited resources reaching the LGAs. The new ruling disrupts this system and strengthens the financial independence of local governments. President Bola Tinubu's administration had previously voiced support for local government autonomy. This decision aligns with those efforts and is expected to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the country's third tier of government.
