Nigeria Investigates $10 Billion Oil Theft and Toxic Fuel Imports - Nigeria lost an average of 437,000 barrels of crude oil per day between January and July 2024, worth about $10 billion, due to theft, vandalism, and other criminal activities. In response, the House of Representatives has launched a special committee to investigate the causes and extent of oil theft, as well as the importation of toxic fuel. The House and Senate have summoned key stakeholders, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and Dangote Petroleum Refinery, to provide answers. Factors contributing to the crisis include inadequate security, collaboration between criminals and authorities, and inefficient legal processes. The lawmakers have pledged to enact stronger legislation, improve existing laws, and work with security agencies to combat the issue and protect Nigeria's oil infrastructure. The investigation aims to uncover the root causes, bring the culprits to justice, and develop sustainable solutions to safeguard the country's oil sector and promote national development.

Nigeria to tap diaspora savings with $500m securities issuance - Nigeria's Finance Minister, Wale Edun, has announced plans to issue a $500 million dollar-denominated security to attract foreign currency held by Nigerians abroad. This move is part of the government's strategy to stabilize the Naira and boost foreign exchange reserves. Edun also highlighted positive economic indicators, including a stable exchange rate, improved trade balance, and a declining inflation rate. The CBN's monetary policy adjustments and the transition to a willing-buyer, willing-seller FX model have contributed to these gains. The government is optimistic about the economy's trajectory, with increased liquidity and foreign exchange availability expected to attract both domestic and foreign investments, leading to job creation and poverty reduction.
