Remittance Windfall: Nigeria's Foreign Exchange Reserves Surge by 130% - Nigeria is basking in the glow of a record-breaking remittance surge. In July 2024, the country received a staggering $553 million in remittances, a 130% increase from the previous year. This influx of foreign currency is a testament to the Central Bank of Nigeria's (CBN) successful efforts to create a more favourable environment for remittances. The CBN's strategic initiatives, including licensing new International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs) and implementing a more flexible foreign exchange market, have paid off handsomely. These measures have not only boosted remittance inflows but have also strengthened Nigeria's foreign exchange reserves, giving the CBN greater power to defend the naira. This surge in remittances is a significant development for Nigeria's economy. It provides a much-needed boost to foreign exchange reserves, which can help stabilize the naira and attract foreign investment. Additionally, remittances can contribute to economic growth by stimulating domestic consumption and investment. While the recent surge in remittances is a positive development, it's important to note that Nigeria's economy still faces several challenges. The country's high inflation rate and unemployment rate continue to be major concerns. However, the increase in remittances can help to alleviate some of these pressures. As Nigeria continues to attract remittances, it's essential to explore ways to diversify the economy further and reduce reliance on foreign inflows. This could involve promoting exports, attracting foreign direct investment, and developing domestic industries.

NLC Threatens Mass Protests Amid Police Invitation to President - The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning to the Nigerian government, threatening mass protests and industrial action if anything happens to its President, Joe Ajaero. The threat comes in response to the recent police invitation to Ajaero on charges of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime. The NLC has accused the police of "witch-hunting" and "harassment," claiming that the invitation is politically motivated and aimed at silencing the labour movement. The union has vowed to honour the police invitation but has requested an extension of time to prepare for the interview. Despite the police invitation, there are unconfirmed reports that Ajaero may still attend the scheduled meeting on Wednesday. The NLC has mobilized its members to accompany their President to the police headquarters, and Ajaero's lawyers have written to the police detailing why he is unable to attend the meeting on Tuesday. The NLC's threat of mass protests and industrial action has raised concerns about the potential for widespread disruption in Nigeria. The union has called on civil society allies and the general public to stand in solidarity with the labour movement in this critical moment.

My three takeaways from the recent protests - Ahead of the recently concluded protests, I found it surprising that the government was too jittery and felt that those who called for the protests would listen to the voices of elders and traditional rulers that they believed were responsible for their hunger and hopelessness.
