CBN Expected to Raise Rates Again at MPC Meeting - Nigeria's central bank, the CBN, is set to hold its MPC meeting on Monday with analysts expecting another interest rate hike. This comes despite a pause in May after a temporary slowdown in inflation. However, June's inflation rate surged to 34.19%, prompting concerns. Analysts predict a hike in the range of 50 to 100 basis points. While CBN Governor Cardoso previously signalled a pause in July, rising inflation might force a change of course. Some analysts argue for maintaining current rates, highlighting their negative impact on economic growth and their limited effectiveness in curbing inflation. Notably, the CBN has already raised rates by a significant 750 basis points since July 2023. The key question remains: will the MPC prioritize fighting inflation with another rate hike, or will they consider the potential drawbacks for the economy and opt for a hold? The decision will be closely watched by businesses and Nigerians alike, as it will impact borrowing costs and overall economic activity.
